Background===
RPI has had a license for possession and use of special nuclear material since 1965.
In 1980, RPI received three PuBe neutron sources totalling 90 grams of encapsulated plutonium from Hudson Valley Community College.
The Radiation Safety Officer (RS0) at RPI requested and received licensing for these sources from the New York State Department of Health by adding l
them to RPI's State license. HMSS staff advised Rensselaer that this action was inappropriate due to the existence of the current NRC license, and recommended that a request for amendment be submitted. The amendment application dated December 23, 1981, requests the addition of three PuBe neutron sources (approx. 30 g Pu/ source) to be used for activation analysis and instrument calibration.
II.
Discussion and Reconnendation The established administrative procedures and standards at RPI are suited to handle sealed PuBe sources, and the inclusion of three additional sources should not adversely affect the safety of the RPI program or the personnel involved in the use of this material.
Comments from Mr. J. Roth, Region I, are that the addition of these sources should not present any problem in the RPI Radiation Safety program.
Accordingly, it is recornended that the license be amended (Amendment No. 5) to include the sources as described in the RPI application.
