Docket No. 50-285

Dear Mr. Clark:

The attached report was requested during a telephone discussion between Mr. T. Patterson and Mr. R. Kellogg of Omaha Public Power District, Mr. E. Tourigny of your staff, and Mr. Carl Czajkowski of Brookhaven National Laboratory. The report presents the results of a detailed examination perfonned on severely corroded reactor coolant pump (RCP) case closure studs from the Fort Calhoun Station. The closure studs corroded as a result of leakage past the casing flexitallic gaskets, as reported in the Fort Calhoun Station Licensee Event Report 80-10, dated June 17, 1980.

The sixteen RCP closure studs for each of the four pumps were again visually inspected during the recently completed refur. ling outage.

Boric acid residue was noted on studs for pumps A, B, C, and D.

For pumps A and B, five studs from each pump were replaced and four studs from pump C were replaced.

However, the worst noted corrosion was about one-quarter inch wastage, which would not be a threat to the stud's effectiveness.

The inspection program which has been implemented pro-vides for monitoring corrosion and implementing any required corrective action.

Sincerely, W.C./, Jones N
