Dear Mr. Jones:

The purpose of this letter is to update the staff's guidance in regard to Section 50.55 a of 10 CFR Part 50 entitled Codes and Standards..

~

Section 50.55a(g) of 10 CFR Part 50 requires that your program be revised at 120 month intervals with the start of comercial operation being the reference date. The start of the next interval for your facility is September 26, 1983 and your inservice inspection and testing progrman. must be based on the edition and addenda of the ASME Code incorporated by 10 CFR 50.55a(b) 12 months prior to that date. Any changes to your Technical Specification are required to be submitted at least 6 months prior to the beginning of a 120 month interval and it is requested that any requests for relief from ASME Code requirements be prov;ded on the same schedule. It should be under-stood that 10 CFR 50.55a(g) does not require NRC approval of your revised program and that the staff review will address only requdsts for relief from Code requirements and Technical Specification changes. Submittal of your revised program is not required unless specifically requestedby the staff-to support your relief requests.

The staff review of your relief requests for.your next interval will be con-ducted on a schedule based on the program revision requirements for your facility and is scheduled to be completed by September 26, 1983.

As you know, a number of relief requests for Fort Calhoun have already been granted. We do not have any relief requests currently inhouse.

We would like to reiterate that all relief previously granted expires on September 26, 1983, which is 10 years following the date of comercial operation of Fort Calhoun Station Unit.No. 1.

This date is consistent with the start of your next 120 month interval.

The staff has.recently upgraded to guidances concerning inservice testing of pumps and valves. The enclosure contains the most current g*uid uce which may be useful to you.
