Dear Mr. Guild:

This is in response to your Freedom of Information Act request dated September 30, 1981 and your telephone conversation with Ms. Carol Ann Reed of my staff on October 23, 1981.

At your request Mr. H. J. McGurren,0f the Office of the Executive Legal Director was contacted regarding documents which you thought existed concerning a meeting in the latter part of September 1981 concerning the Barnwell Facility.

He confirmed that he was not aware of any documentation regarding the meeting.

However, he did recall some correspondence with Ms. Ruth S. Thomas in September 1980 and 1981.

Copies of this correspondence are enclosed.

Dear Ms. Thomas:

I have been asked by Mr. Engelhardt to respond to your letter to him dated September 15, 1980, concerning your desire to be kept informed of all deve'op-ments relating to the possibility of the use of the Barnwell Nuclear Fuel Plant as an Away-From-Reactor storage facility for comercial-nuclear waste and the fact that you were not informed of the Department of Energy Feder_al, Regis.tez notice dated August 15, 1980, whict concerned the possible use of the Barnwell facility.

Engelhardt indicated to you in his letter of February 21, 1979, we will reake every effort to keep you advised of any correspondence, transcripts of meetings or other materials related to the use of the Barnwell Plant for Away-From-Reactor storage. We cannot, however, assure you that we will be able to inform you of all actions or proposals of other Federal agencies that may concern the use of the Barnwell facility.

To assure Environmentalists. Inc., that it has sufficient notice of actions of other Federal agencies which may relate to the Barnwell facility, we suggest that specific requests be made to the Federal agencies, such as the Dapartment of Energy, that are considering the use of the Barnwell facility and that the Federal Register be periodically examined.

We appreciate the fact that your organization may not be able to afford this L

publication. However, the Federal Reoister. is widely available.
