EPIP 360-5 Rev. 0 DEC I5 581 OPERATION OF THE EBERLINE SAM-2

^

A.

PURPOSE The purpose of this procedure is to describe the method for using the Eberline stabilized assay meter (SAM-2) to determine the I-131 activity of charcoal cartridge samples taken under accident conditions.

O.

REFERENCES 1.

Eberline Tech Manual for SAM-2 2.

EPIP 360-4 C.

PREREQUISITES 1.

The SAM-2 equipment will be in the secondary sanple room, unless a health physicist indicP'.es otherwise.

When using the SAM-2 in an emergency, TLD finger rings, a 1R self 2.

reader, an electronic dosimeter (if available), or any other dosimetry or clothing as prescribed by rad / chem supervision.

After the iodine sample is taken indicate, with an arrow on the 3.

cartridge, the direction of flow thru the cartridge.

If possible, use a vacuum on the cartridge with service air for ten 4.

minutes to remove ncble gases. Place the cartridge in a plastic bag and label the bag. Include the following information: location of sample, time on, time off, total air flow (or flow rate).

D.

PRECAUTIONS 1.

Use the SAM-2 for determining I-131 activity during emergency conditions or if the GeLi/MCA system in the ccunting room cannot be used. The SAM-2 is kept in the secondary sample room.

Be sure the power cord is connected to the socket in the back (lcwer 2.

right) of the unit and the NaI detector cable is connected to the frcnt (lower right) of the unit (CETECTOR).

3.

Don't cperate the SAM-2 at an operating voltage greater than IC00V.

Place the cartridge holder on the slot just above the bottom slot in 4.

the lead shield.

l E.

LIMITATICNS AND ACTIONS 1

l The total cuarterly dose equivalent received must be less than 3 rem to the whole body and less than 18-3/4 rem to the extremities.

F.

ROCEDURE Plug the SAH-2 into an outlet, turn the POWER (located at the back of 1.

the unit) to ON, and let the unit warm up for at least 15 minutes.

2.

The follo@.; dials and switches must be set as follows:

t STABILIZER (back of unit): ON CH1, CH2: CH1 RESPONSE: fully counter-clockwise (CCW)

DISPLAY: ON TIMED, STOP, MAN: TIMED CH1 WINDOW: 0.1 CH1 TWESHOLD: to value indicated on the tcp of the SAM-2 CH2 WItCOW: 1.0 CH2 TFRESHOLD: 8.0

+, OFF,-: upper +, lower OFF IN, OUT: Upper IN, lower GUT HV ADJJST: to value indicated on the tcp of the SAM-2 3.

Close the door of the RD-15U lead snield, press the RESET / START button, and count the background for two minutes. (CDUNT TIME IN MINUTES switches on 2, X1). Counting is complete when the red light goes out. Record the result on the SAM-2 Log Sheet (attached).

Place the sealed cartridge (on either side) upon the metal cartridge 4.

nolder located inside the lead shield. - Count the cartridge-for one minute.

(COUNT TIME IN MINUTES cn 1 X1). Record the result.

c Invert the cartridge, re-ccunt for one minute, and record the result.

5.

6.

Add the readings from steps F.4 and F.5 and record the result.

Subtract the " background" count (Step F.3) from the sumed " cartridge 7.

+ backgrouno" counts ($tep F.6) to obtain the net ccunts (per 2 minutes).

8.

Divide the result obtained in Step F.7 by two (2) to get the net cpm.

Using the calibration graph for the SAM-2, deteImine the total iodine 9.

acttdEMhC1) ceposited on the cartridge, correspcnding to the cpm from Step F.8.

A copy cf the calibration graph is keot with the SAM-2 and in the rad / chem office.

NOTE Use the proper graph for the SAM-2 (serial number) being used.

10. Complete the log sheet to determine the approximate ccncentration (uCi/cc) of I-131 that passed thru the filter. This recresents the concentration of I-131 in the air by the sample.

Sign and date the form and report the results prcrrptly to radiation 11.

protection supervisien.
