It is our understanding that there is little effort currently. under way n

to characterize the. status ~ of these. makeup and purification system domineralizers or to develop a plan for. their ultimate disposition.

Based on a limited review by my staff, we are concerned about the current {

status and the long term safety of the dominera112ers in their practt condition. More than two and a half years have passed since the purification dominera11xers were highly contaminated in the early days of the accident. Based on radiation surveys taken in 1979 of the cubicles housing the dominera11zer vessels, we estimate that the integrated dose to the organic resin.in the purification domineralizer vessels is at least at a level where considerable radiation degradation can occur (i.e., >-1 x 103 rad). We also understand that further.

radiation surveys indicate that the resin material has sluwM.d in the vessel. We are concerned about the generation of gases in the vessels and the potential for depressurization via the pressure relief valve.

We are also concerned that, the longer the material remains in the present location, the opportunity for sluicing the resins out of the vessels may be lost and the subsequent task of removing the vessels.
