Dear Mr. Denton:
Your letter of June 9, 1981 to W. S. Lee requested quarterly updates of the projected construction completion date for Catawba Unit 1.
The following provides an update of our construction progress including erection rates for various commodities.
Catawba Unit 1 is estimated to be 87% complete as of October 25, 1981. This unit is currently four months behind the August 1983 fuel load date. The slippage of mechanical systems scheduled for turnover to the Steam Production Department for functional testing continues to impact ourf rojected comple-p tion date. Special emphasis is being placed on the resolution of problems which delay these system turnovers.
Several major milestones in our construction schedule were achieved the last three months. Cleaning of the Chemical and Volume Control System (NV), began October 13, 1981, was completed November 12, 1981. We are now preparing to test this system hydrostatically. Work on this system is currently on the project critical path.
The main turbine was placed on its turning gear December 7, 1981. The high level leak test of the condenser war also completed about this time. Our next major milestone is the Alkaline Wash of the Condenser and Condensate system piping. We expect to begin this cleaning on January 4, 1982.
Our total Construction workforce increased from 3,589 on August 31, 1981, to 3,670 on November 23, 1981.
In addition, there are 310 contractor personnel on-site.
Second shift work is continuing in the hanger crection area. Over-time is used where necessary to complete work on critical systems.
The following quantities of listed comiaodities were erected during the September, 0 00 os j

In parallel with continuing work we are in the process of accomplishing an overall schedule reassessment. The reassessment will require many manhours and several itera-tions between the Design Engineering, Construction and Steam Production depart-ments. A new realistic but challenging schedule will be developed for the project over the next few months.
Ver,y truly yours,
