The California Society of Professional Engineers has urged the U. S.
Nuclear Regulatory Commission to license San'0nofre Nuclear Generating Station's Units 2 and 3 for operation as soon as possible.
The Society representing engineers in all disciplines, said the oper-ation of the plant is " vital to the country's future" in developing an et
/
adequate energy base.
The Society's Board of Directors urged all engineers to join in the endorsement.
The Nuclear Regulatory Comission's Atomic Safety and Licenging Board is currently considering a low power license for the 1100-megawatt unit 2 which is essentially complete and ready for startup.
Construction of the nuclear plant's Unit 3 is 90% complete and the unit will be ready for oper-ation in late 1982.
San Onofre has been successfully generating electricity since 1968 when the 436-megawatt Unit I come onstream.
Charles J. Helin, P.
E., President of the California Society of Pro-
' fessional Engineers, noted that "A balanced energy mix including nuclear
/Ch power is critical to the reindustrialization of the(/ United' Stat's and the e
M NN economic future of the country."
