I EXECUTIVE

SUMMARY

This progress report presents data for field and laboratory ,

work during the period August 22 to November 20, 1981.

During that time, three field trips were made to retrieve and l replace long- and short-term pancls at each of 20 stations, and to measure temperature, salinity, pH and dissolved oxygen. All work was accomplished,  ;

but the entire rack of panels was missing at Station 13 (Rocknak's Yacht Basin, Cedar Creek) in October, and we were requested to remove the rack

{

at Station 16 (Berkeley Yacht Basin, Seaside) in November. The rack was  ;

1 replaced at Station 13 in November, and we will locate a new site for  !

l Station 16 in December.

! Laboratory analysis of the panels showed Teredo bartschi present l at Oyster Creek Stations 6 and 7 in September, October and November panels,

! and a single specimen at Station 10A in November. T. navalis continues l I to be most corrmon at Station 1, near Barnegat Inlet. Bankia gouldi occur-red in low numbers at several stations along the western shore of Barnegat Bay Panels from several stations had no shipworms present. Limnoria spp. l l

were present at Stations 1, 2, 3, 4, and 4A, where they have been recorded i for the last several years, and were also seen at Station 15 in September.

Specimens examined for gonad analysis during August and September showed the shipworms to be primarily in the ripe and spawning stages where-as by October most gonads were in the spent condition. Many of the spent '

gonads were in young males that had probably set during the early-to-mid-I summer months and became sexually mature.

Histopathological observations revealed a heavy incidence of r

Minchinia infections in Teredo bartschi, especially at Station 7.

STUDY OF WOODBORER POPULATIONS IN RELATI0ff TO OYSTER CREEK GENERATING STATION by N. Maciolek-Blake, C.I. Belmore, and R.E. Hillman INTRODUCTION Battelle's New England Marine Research Laboratory is conducting I an investigation to determine whether the generating station is affecting the resident marine borer population in Oyster Creek to the extent that that population is contributing significantly to marine borer-caused damage in Barnegat Bay.

A description of the program and procedures used may be found in the Fifth Annual Report titled Study of Woodborer Populations in Rela-tion to the Oyster Creek Generating Station, Report 15040, dated February 27, 1981.

This report presents data for the twenty-sixth quarterly period from August 22 to November 20, 1981.

PROCEDURES AND INTERIM DATA Exposure Panels The long-term and short-tern exposure panels were retrieved and replaced with new untreated pre-soaked (for two weeks) panels at the 20 I exposure sites in Barnegat Bay and adjacent waters (Figure 1) during the periods September 9-10, October 6-7, and November 3-4, 1981. Long-term and short-term panels at all stations werc retrieved and replaced with two exceptions. At Station 13, the entire rack of panels was missing in Octo-ber,1981, and a new rack was installed the following month on November 3, 1981. At Station 16, the owner of the Berkely Yacht Basin requested I that we remove the rack from that location in November,1981. Although we were able to retrieve the November panels, we were not able immediately to locate a new site for the rack.

Table i describes the geographical locations of the exposure sites. The data for the laboratory examination of the panels may be found i in Tables 2 through 5.
