WESTINGHOUSE RESPONSE TO NRC NOTICE OF VIOLATION 81_14-01__

= =.

_=- __

==___ --==------

In regard to the requirement that nuclear fuel assemblies will not retain water, the following actions are identified:

1.

The violation is correct as stated in your notice of violation report.

2.

An operating procedure was in effect which required the slitting of the plastic covers but did not address subsequent actions, such as taping and gathering of excess plastic, which interfered with free drainage capabilities.

3.

To correct this situation, area supervision promptly provided drainage openings for the assemblies and revised the operating procedure to include the placement of slits as the final step.

Area personnel were instructed of the procedural change, and reasons for the change, in workolace meetings. Subsequent in-spections of assemblies in storage have confirmed that they are provided with f ree drainage capabilities.

4.

The correction actions listed above have been ef fective in pre-venting recurrence.

5.

Full compliance has been achieved.
