Dear Mr. Cavanaugh:

JGuttman TSpeis

SUBJECT:

T!!! ACTION ITEM II.K.2.16 " REACTOR COOLANT PUMP SEAL DAMAGE" We have reviewed your response dated May 23, 1980, concerning the subject issue and we have discussed the issue with your staff. Because the Arkansas Nuclear One, Unit No.1, operation relies upon operator action to reinstate the RCP seal injection water upon loss of offsite power an we have determined either the following actions be provided in order to resolve the II.K.2.16 issue for ANO-1: (1) conformatory expr.rimentation demonstrating the RCP seal integrity is maintained after two hours of coolant deprivation and quenching as a result of reinstating seal injection water, or (2) automation of the cooling systems such that the seal injection water is automatically maintained following loss of offsite power, or (3) reanalysis of FSAR Chapter 14 transients and accidents demonstrating the seal failure will not result in unacceptable consequences.

We request within 30 days from receipt of this letter, your commitment, description of method - and schedule for resolution of the II.K.2.16 issue.

l Sincerely, i
