Dear Mr. Keppler:

On July 24, 1981, Mr. T. D. Geib of Public Service Company of Indiana, Inc. (PSI) notified your office of a potentially reportable item as required by 10 CFR 50.55(e). An inspection of Limitorque valve motor-operators revealed that an underrated terminal block had been installed in several of the operators. Further investigation determined that this terminal block, Marathon 300 series, had originally beca rated for the specified service conditions of 600 volts and 30 amps, but had been subsequently derated to 300 volts and 30 amps.

Based upon the investigation of this matter PSI has instructed its architect-engineer, Sargent & Lundy, to determine which spec-ifications identify the Marathon 300 series block and which suppli-ers have actually used these blocks.

If a supplier has not used the Marathon 300 series block on the Marble Hill Project an ECN will be issued to remove the Marathon 300 terminal block from the specification. Where Marathon 300 terminal blocks have been supplied to the Marble Hill Project, Sargent & Lundy will verify that they will only be used in appli-cations less than or equal to their revised rated service conditions.

If Sargent & Lundy determines that any Marathon 300 terminal blocks are used in applications greater than their revised rated service conditions corrective action will be taken.
