Dear Mr. Keppler:
On March 3, 1981, Mr. T. D. Geib of Public Service Company of Indiana, Inc. (PSI) notified your office of a potentially r'eportable item as required 1y 10 CFR 50.55(e). During an aedit of ITT Grinnell Valve Company, Ph1 quality assurance personnel determined that ITT Grinnell was applying its PSI approved quality assurance program to only certain ASME Code related parts of safety-related diaphragm valves intended for use at Marble Hill. Further examination indicated that certain other parts of some of these valves may serve safety-related functions and were not handled under a PSI approved quality assurance program. <
At PSI's request ITT Grinnell, the valve designer, has identified which non-ASME Code component parts of its valve assemblies are important to insure the valves' safety-related functions. For these component parts ITT Grinnell has provided documented support which justifies their Certificate of Compliance to the valve specification.
Based upon this information, adequate assurance exists that the subject valves can perform their safety-related functions. This item therefore would not have affected adversely the safe operation of the plant and is not reportable under 10 CFR 50.55(e).
