Letter, J. G. Haynes (SCE) to R. H. Engelken (NRC) dated September 1, 1981 The referenced letters contain our response to the subject IE Bulletin and document the results of investigations into the audibility of the In-Plant i
Paging (IPPS), Immediate Evacuation Signal (IES), and Area Radiation l
Monitoring (ARMS) Systems.
Signal audibility was determined to be inadequate in several plant locations and extensive modifications to these systems were made during the recent refueling and maintenance outage.
As mentioned in Reference Letter four (4), testing of the Immediate Evacuation Signal for its audibility in the plant will be completed concurrent with
+esting of the surrounding off-site sirens.

U. S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION R. H. ENGELKEN, DIRECTOR IE BULLETIN 79-18 PAGE 2 Solutions to the engineering problems of the IPPS, IES and ARMS Systems have been formulated.
The estimated completion date for these modifications is May, 1982. As an interim measure, evacuation procedures have been modified to ensure that messengers, with the appropriate radiological protection, will be dispatched to areas not served by the IPPS, IES and ARMS Systems to alert personnel in the event that evacuation is necessary.
Following the completion of proposed permanent corrective action on the IPPS, IES and ARMS systems, they will be tested again.
This testing will be used to verify the functional adequacy of the systems. After system testing has been completed, the interim administrative measures taken to ensure personnel evacuation will be re-evaluated and revised acccordingly.
If you have any questions concerning the above matter, please contact me.
Sincerely,
/?
