WASHINGTON, D. C. 20555 May 14, 1981 MEMORANDUM FOR:
S. Burwell Licensing Branch 2, DL FROM:
E. Sylvester Auxiliary Systems Branch, DSI THRU:
Olan D. Parr, Chief Auxiliary Systems Branch, OSI
SUBJECT:
SUMMARY
OF MAY 6,1981 SITE VISIT DISCUSSIONS ON COMANCHE PEAK AUXILIARY FEEDWATER SYSTEM On May 6,1981, Mr. Olan Parr and myself visited the Comanche Peak site to view the components and piping arrangements for the auxiliary feedwater (AFW) system and to discuss the AFW system design. The purpose of the site visit was to verify that the AFW system reliability analysis performed by the applicant was in confonnance with the methodology of NUREG-0611. Accompanying us was Mr. Ben Roscoe of Sandia Laboratories who is a consultant to the Reliability and Risk Assessment Branch for the staff evaluation of the reliability study. The reliability study had been previously submitted by the applicant in Amendment 14 to the FSAR. A list of participants in the site visit discussions is provided in Enclosure 1.
Prior to viewing the AFW system components and piping arrangement, repre-sentatives of Texas Utilities Generating Company (TUGCO) and Texas Utilities Services, Incorporated (TUSI) provided us with a brief description of the system design and operation. We then toured the compartments housing the auxiliary feedwater pumps and major valves, the steam generator comparr, ments, and the control room. Our walkdown of the system included those plant areas where AFW system piping is interconnected to other plant systems.
After the system walkdown, a discussion was held on the AFW system reliability study with members of the applicant's staff. TUGC0 and TUSI personnel responded to our questions regarding AFW system control and instrumentation, single-failure capabilities, procedures for system operation, test and main-tenance, potential for common mode failure and alternate water supply.
In response to a concern for valve failure, Mr. Richard Werner of TUSI agreed to transmit to us a drawing of the condensate storage tank isolation valve i
in the AFW pump suction lines. The applicant will verify that the AFW system is safety grade in its entirety and the AFW system can be controlled during normal and emergency plant shutdown using only safety-grade equipment.
The applicant will aho verify that the condensate storage tank low level l

alarm setpoint will allow 20 minutes for operator action to transfer the AFW pump suction to the alternate water supply assuming that the largest capacity AFW pump _is operating.
