Director, Region IV Nuclear Regulatory Comission 611 Ryan Plaza Drive, Suite 1000 Arlington, Texas 76012

Dear Mr. Seyfrit:

South Texas Project Units 1&2 Docket Nos. STN 50-498, STN 50-499 Second Interim Report Concerning Reactor Cavity Ventilation Desian On October 17, 1980, pursuant to 10CFR50.55(e), Houston Lighting &

Power Ccapany notified your office of an item concerning the reactor cavity vertilation design for the South Texas Project.

During a confimatory themal analysis of the reactor coolant piping supports located in the pri-mary shield wall penetrations, it was detemined that the temperature of the primary shield wall concrete in the penetration and along the face exposed to the reactor vessel would exceed the specified limits. The following discussion provides the present status of this item.

A parameter study to define the minimum cooling air flow through the l

clearance between the reactor vessel and the primary shield wall to maintain concrete below its design temperature is undergoing design verification.

In addition, "as built" measurements of the clearance between the reactor vessel insulation and the primary shield wall have been taken.

Corrective action will not be detemined until completion of further engineering evaluations. The next status report on this item will be submitted to your office by July 1,1981.

If there are any questions r',ncerning this item, please contact Mr. Michcel E. Powell at (713) 676-8592.
