Response

During the recirculation phase of a LOCA, the number and type of pumps operating will depend on reactor coolant pressure and time after the LOCA. The varicus codes, their expected flow rates, NPSH available and NPSH required are su :arized in the following table. d. The water quality in a post LOCA environment under which these pu:ps will be operatinh-Respt nse : Te chnical. Specification 3.1.2.10 requires that t!.a safety injection tank have a minicum boron concentratica of 2200 pps while Technical Specification 3.4.6 has nain coolant system che=tstry limits as su :arized below: STEADY STATE TRANSIENT PARAMETER LIMIT LIMIT Dissolved Oxygen 1 0.10 ppe f 1.0 ppa Chloride 1 0.15 ppa i 1.50 ppm Fluoride 1 0.15 pps i 1.50 pps Yankee Rowe does not have a containment spray system and therefore does not inject or require chemicals for iodine removal. The only water injected is the borated water from the safety injection tank. vankee believes that the water quality during the post LOCA period will not have adverse affects because of plant and system design. Each of the reactor coolant loops is located in a reinforced concrete compartnent which isolates the loops from each other and the containment sump. Leakage from the co:partnents drain into a common drain area which has several screened drains and a sca: - opening wh: h provide flow paths tn the bottom of the spherical con

This effectively screens out any large debris before teaching the sucp screen. The spherical contain ent vessel acts like a settling chamber for any debris which gets that far. The recircalation sump location is located approxinately 13 feet off center which ceans that the sump elevation is approxicately I foot higher than the araa where impurities would tend to settle out. The suction line extends several inches above this elevation. As can be seen frca the table in the response to question Ib, the Yankee Rowe ficw rates during recirculation are small compared to a larger unit and the resultant low velocities (approximately.075 ft/sec for 600 gp flow rate) coupled with the relatively high containment water level approxicately 6-7 feet above the suction piping insure that debris would settle out and vortexing will not oca.r. The attached sketch shows the dimensions and layout of the sump. 4

Response

Attached are the manufacturer's certified pump curves for the LPSI and HPSI pumps which show head, ef ficiency, and horsepower requirements. Also attached is a cantfacturer's curve which shows the NPSH required. When the pumps were originally purchased, it was intended that the HPSI pumps would be used during the recirculation mode of operation and the pu ps design reflected this. The LPSI pumps were not originally purchased to be used during the recirculation code. YAEC has verified that the pumps will not be adversely affected by the tenperature and pressures resulting from a LOCA. Mechanical seals will be installed on the #2 and #3 pucps (seals installed on #1 pu=ps 6/23/77). The pu p canufacturer has stated that pumps of this type do not experience probleas when grit enters the pucp during operation. In conclusion, YAEC and the purp vendors believe that the use of the LPSI and HPSI pucps are acceptable for use during the recirculation code of operation. l
