ADDENDUM O~

secnox w rusam axD arDanuuc caxaxcrearsucs FtEL CENTRAL TEMPERATURE CALCULATION RESULTS FOR DRESEN TYPE III-F PSIDAD FUEL By Gary O. Jones January 20, 1965 The central temperature calculation for the Type III-F pellet fuel shova incipient melting to occur at a heat flux of h66,000 Btu /hr-ft2 which corresponds to 20.2 KV/ft. This is above 125 percent of the proposed ' license steady state heat flux, thus indicating that =elting does not occur in the pellet fuel. This calculation was cade using the following values:

Incipient celting temperature of U0, *F 5080 2

Cladding outside diameter, inches j

O.5625 Cladding thickness, inches 0.035 Pellet fuel diameter, inches 0.462 2

Nucleate boiling heat tmnsfer coefficient, Btu /hr-ft

  • F 10,000 Heat transfer coefficient between fuel pellet and 2

cladding, Btu /hr-ft

  • F 1000 Cladding thermal conductivity, Btu /hr-ft *F 91 2 Pelletthermalconductivity, Btu /hr-ft*F (1) Curve attached UO The Type III-F powder fuel temperature calculation was made using the same values with the following exceptions:

Powder fuel diameter, inches 0.k92 i

Heat transfer coefficient between powder fuel and 2

cladding, Btu /hr-ft..y 3 con UO2 powder thermal conductivity, Btu /hr-ft *F Curve attached The difference in the fuel diar::eter and heat transfer coefficient is due to the

- fact that vibratory compacted powder fuel is in intimate contact with the claddir4 whereas the pellet fuel is not. The powder fuel conductivity curve was obtained from M.F. Lyons and D.H. Coplin, and is based on preliminary conclusions drawn from out-of-pile data and the latest AEC-Euratom, UO2 High Performance Program i

I (1) The pellet conducti%ty curve is taken from Reference 1.

8009030 D 3 t

m 2-experi= ental maults for powder fuel. Thoir conclusions have thus far not been published and am subject to chance pending cora extensive interpretation of the data and/or accumulation of additional experi= ental data. The result of the temperature calculation for the Type III-F powder fuel shova incipient celting to occur at a heat flux of 450,000 Btu /hr-ft2 which corresponds to 19.4 101/f t.

This heat flux cormsponds to 125 percent of the proposed license steady state heat flux for the ?fpe III-F fuel.

Based on the temperature calculations =ade using the latest technical data, incipient r.elting does not occur in any of the Type III-F mload fual below 125 percent of the proposed license steady state heat flux.
