B. 11. Grier Description of Item Requiring Resolution:
The licensee reported to Region II by phone that Oconee 2 loose parts conitoring system indicated the presence of foreign caterial in the lower part of the reactor ve'ssel. The indication from the nonitoring 5
system were first noted on restart of a rector ccolant pump following a reactor trip.
The licensee reports that its analysis indicates the presence of an object about 5/8 to 3/4 inch in diameter in the Irwer plenum of the reactor vessel. The licensee indicates to Region II that the presence of such loose material is not consids ed to be of safety significance, and the licensee proposes to operate while continuing investigation.
The licensee is expecica to siumit a report to the Directorate of Licensing on January 11,1974.
R0 Recocraendations and proposed Course of Action:
1.
The Directorate of Licensing will review the licensee's rationale for continuing operation prd or to definitive analysis of the cause and significance of the occurrence.
2.
The Directorate of Licensing will advise RO and the licensee whether the licensee's proposed mode of operation is acceptable.
3.
The Directorate of Licensing will process any changes to technical specifications which may be required.

4.
The Directorate of Regulatory Operations will pmvide additional information as it becomes available.
5.
The Directorate of Regulatory Operations will verify adherence to any technical specification changes.
