Box 1700 Houston, Texas 77251 SUBJECT: NRC INSPECTION REPORT 50-498/93-16; 50-499/93-16' This refers to the inspection conducted by Mr. T. W. Dexter, of this office on April 12-16, 1993. The inspection included a review of activities authorized for your South Texas Project Nuclear Power Plant, Units 1'and 2, facility. At the conclusion of the inspection, the findings were discussed with' Mr. W. H. Kinsey and those members of your staff identified in the enclosed- reoort. Areas examined during the inspection are identified in the report. Within these areas, the inspection c0nsisted of selective examination of. procedures and representative recoros, interviews with personnel, and observation of activities in progress. It was noted during this inspection that some improvement was seen in the- timeliness of repairs to security equipment. However, while compensatory actions were adequate when implemented, implementation .of compensatory measures appeared to be slow in some instances. Also, the' number of compensatory actions required has contributed to excessive ~ overtime for some members of the security force. .Because excessive overtime by plant staff;is of concern to NRC, we request that you evaluate the extent of this proDlem for the security force.
