McGuire Nuclear Station NPDES Permit NC0024392 BOD Exceedences, Outfall 003 File:

Dear Mr. Gleason:

P Pursuant to Part II, Section D (6)(d) of the subject permit, this is a follow-up written report to the North Carolina Department of Environment, Health and Natural Resources for recent BOD exceedences at the McGuire Nuclear Station.

The initial notifications were made to Mr. Mike Parker on April 14 and 19, 1993,.and to Mr.-

Richard Bridgeman on April 27, 1993, by Norma Atherton of Duke Power Company.

McGuire Nuclear Station's domestic and sanitary treatment system (Outfall 003) exceeded the permitted daily maximum limits of 45 mg/L for BOD samples collected on April 6, 13, 20 and 21, 1993.

The values observed on those samples were 92.1, 65.5, 49.2 and 50.8 -

mg/L respectively.

Based upon these values, it is anticipated that the monthly average limit of 30 mg/L will be exceeded.

From our investigations and preliminary test results, we' suspect the cause of these BOD exceedences can be attributed to an i

extensive floor wax stripping operation that occurred on the weekend of March 19, 20 and 21, 1993.

The floor cleaning product used was a caustic, butyl cellusolve based cleaner.

This product has been used in the past without experiencing any problems with our sanitary system.

Presently, we are reviewing our housekeeping practices and floor stripping products.

Based upon the results of our review, we will implement corrective measures'to preclude a reoccurrence of this event. ~ The sanitary treatment system is gradually recovering.

An update letter will be provided to you once the corrective measures have been determined.
