Response to Generic Letter 92-08 (TAC No. 85603)
G e n t.'a m e n:
NRC Bulletin 92-01 discussed fire endurance testing failures associated with Thermo-Lag 330 fire barrier systems manufactured by Thermal Science, Incorporated (TSI).
Licensees of operating reactors using Thermo-Lag fire barriers were requested to take specific actions and provide a written response. The North Atlantic response to Bulletin 92-01 was submitted in Reference (c). NRC Generic Letter (GL) 92-08 requested additional information regarding Thermo-Lag 330-1 fire barrier systems. This letter provides the information for Seabrook Station requested by GL 92-08.
As reported in Reference (c), Thermo-Lag 330 fire barrier systems are not utilized at Seabrook Station. Selected, redundant, safe-shutdown circuits at Seabrook Station, which are routed through common fire areas, are enclosed in conduit and wrapped with a one-hour fire-rated wrap system. The conduit fire wrap system used at Seabrook Station was supplied by 3M Fire Protection Products. Inside Containment, stainless steel faced mat and stainless steel foil tape are used. Elsewhere, aluminum faced mat and aluminum foil tape are used.
The smallest fire-rated wrapped conduit at Seabrook Station is one inch in diameter Cable trays do not contain cables of redundant circuits requiring the protection of a fire barrier system. Therefore, cable trays at Seabrook Station are not wrapped, North Atlantic evaluated the applicability to Seabrook Station of the technical concerns described in GL 92-08. This evaluation determined that the conduit fire wrap system installed at Seabrook Station complies with NRC requirements and provides a reliable, one-hour fire-rated barrier as required by 10CFR50, Appendix R.
