On August 17, 1 Sol, '.:arolina Power & Light Company (CP&L) submitted a license 1
amendment _ request. to extend the npiration date for the operating licenses for the Brunswick Steam Electric pint, U,iits 1 and 2 to 40 year = from the date of j
the operating licenses were issued The existing operating license expiration j
dates are based on 40 years from the date the construction permits were issued.

On February 6, 1990, the NRC R aff issued a request for_ additional information needed to support completion of the Staff's review.
The Staff requested a
{
response within 60 days of receipt of the request.
Subsequently, on
~
February 28, 1990, representatives of CP&L met with the Staff to obtain additional clarification of the level of detail needed to respond to the Staff questions. During those discussions, the Staff indicated the 60 day response time was arbitrarily selected and that CP&L should advice the Staff of the date by which the requested information could be provided, Based on the scope of the information requested by the Staff, CP&L has 1
determined that additional time will be required to complete a' response to the Staff's questions.
The Company currently plans to complete its response to the Staff request by May 30, 1990, llowever, to assist the Staff in their ongoing review of this issue,= CP&L will submit responses to the various NRC questions as soon as the responses become available.
