NRC GENERIC LETTER (GL) 89-13, " SERVICE WATER SYSTEM PROBLEMS AFFECTING SAFETY-RELATED EQUIPMENT " DATED JULY 18, 1989 BYRON STATION UNITS 1 AND 2 (TAC NOS. 73975 AND 73976)

By letter dated January 29, 1990, Comonwealth Edison Company submitted the first of two required responses to the subject Generic Letter. Noting that-

'you:have committed to each of the five recommended actions of GL 89-13, or to an equally effective alternative course of action for one or more'of them, we accept your response as fulfilling this requirement of the Generic Letter for the Byron Station, Units 1 and 2.

We remind you.that if Byron chooses a course of action different;from'the-p recommended' actions of the Generic Letter, Byron should documemt and retain in aapropriate plant records a justification that the heat removal requirements of tie service water system are satisfied by use of the alternative program.

We look forward to receiving the second of the two required responses to GL 89-13.
