The purpose of this letter is to confirm a co'nversation held on March 5,.1990, between Mr. T. '0. Martin. of this office and Mr. Een Graesser and other members of, your staff, on problems associated with the emergency diesel generators 'at the Zion Station..Some of the recent problems with these generators have
' involved overheated bearings, fretting of small bore tubing,. problems with
- connecting. rods and. rocker arms, air in lube' oil, a' solenoid valve installed y
backwards, and misleading indication supplied by the '"first out panel".
.j Historically, there has been a high number of failures to start.
We are concerned with"the overall nu_mber and types: of -failures being
- experienced on these generators and expect that you will determine root causes-1
.for these. problems'on an individual basis as well as on a collective basis. By
. collective basis we mean that consideration should be given to your overall j
program and approach to maintaining a'nd-troubleshooting these generators.

. increased management attention and corrective action? We request that you, at 1
