REQUEST FOR PROPOSED ALTERt4ATIVE TO REQUIREMENTS OF ASME SECTION III FOR BYRON STATION UNITS 1 AND 2 AND BRAIDWOOD STATION UNITS 1 AND 2 By letter dated February 14, 1990, Commonwealth Edison Company requested approval for the use of B&W and Westinghouse steam generator plugs manufactured with an alternate material. The alternate material is a nickel base alloy, ASMEdesignationSB-166(Alloy 690).
The Materials and Chemical Engineering Branch, Division of Engineering Technology, has reviewed the request and supporting information and concludes that the use of Alloy 690 as a proposed alternative to the use of Alloy 600, in accordance with the requirements of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, will provide an acceptable level of quality and safety and that its use may be authorized under the provisions of 10 CFR 50.55a(a)(3).
