South Texas Project Q,

y Mlh Units 1 & 2 Docket Nos. STN 50-498, STN 50-499 Fif th Interim Report Concerning Maximum / Minimum Soil Density Tests on ECW Backfill On June 20, 1980, ptersuant to 10CFR50.55(e), Houston Lighting & Power Company notified your office of an item concerning soil density tests on the Essential Cooling Water (ECW) pipeline backfill material.

The following information provides a status of the progress completed since our Fourth Interim Report concerning this item:

1.

As reported in the Fourth Interim Report, the backfill bedding for the South Texas Project (STP) Unit 2, 10-inch ECW System pipeline was initially requalified and accepted or. ' fay 18, 1981. However, additional bedding preparation was required it. this area due to the surface disturbance and contamination of the backfill bedding due to heavy rains.

Since the pre-paration of that report the original bedding material was excavated and replaced by new backfill and accepted on June 23, 1981.

In addition, the 10-inch pipes were laid in place and compaction of backfill between the 10-inch pipes was completed on July 10, 1981.

2.

As reported in the Fourth Interim Report, the 30-inch ECW System piping east of the STP Unit 2 Mechanical - Electrical Auxiliary Building (MEAB) was removed from the excavation and the previous backfill bedding exca-vated, replaced and was accepted on May 21, 1981. However, heavy rains, caused washouts with resulting erosion and contamination. As a result, most, if not all of the area will have to be retested following rework.
