Dear Mr. Clark:
The purpose of this letter is to advise the Commission of the rasults of Omaha Public Power District's inspection of SI-160, one of the two containment recirculation piping check valves. This inspection was performed in response to the Commission's letter to the District dated June 29, 1981.
The inspection was conducted as part of the Fort Calhoun Station's inservice inspection program.
The purpose of this inspection was to assure that at least one of the two recirculation check valves (SI-160, SI-159) will open to provide long term recirculation of reactor coolant from the containment sump to the reactor core following a LOCA. On October 17, 1981, SI-160 was removed from the system for examination.
The valve was examined inter-nally for signs of damage from its eight years of service.
It was checked for:
1.
Build up of foreign material.
2.
Missing parts (e.g., hinge pin, spring, etc.).
3.
Freedom of movement of the butterfly flappers (by hand mani-pulation).
This valve, like SI-159, was found to be in excellent condition.
Photocopies of photographs taken during the inspection are attached.
Therefore, the District intends to implement the extended inspection cycle as authorized by the Commission's letter of June 29, 1981. Copies of the Polaroid photographs will be supplied to the Commission when they are developed.
