Dear !!r. Ilukill:
In our letter of !!ay 1980 we recomended that you initiate a progran to inspect the keyway and bore areas of your lou pressure discs for stress corrosion cracking. This action was pronpted by the discovery of such cracks in Westinghouse turbines.
So far, tne inspection progran has covered one or more low pressure rotors at 15 nuclear plants using GE turbines. flo clear indication of stress corrosion cracking has been discovered, although indications o# uater cutting and/or crosion have been observed in several turbines.
In view of these findings, we have decided to discortinue the flRR staff nonitoring of these inspections. f;ormal activities of the Office of Inspection and Enforcenent will continue of course.
He recommend that you continue to perforn disc inspections, as appropriate, and continue to work with Gener.,1 Electric Company to establish safe inspection schedules. Should pu find any significant degradation, such as stress corrosion cracking, we would expect you to promptly report it in the nornal nanner.
Sincerely, coun -
