Long Tem Operability of Deep Draft pumps IE Bulletin 79-15, sted July 11, 1979, was issued to all licensees and holders of construction pemits as a result of deep draft pump deficiencies that were identified at facilities both operating and under construction.

For pending OL applications, lona tem operability of deep draft punps is now beina reviewed by the staff during the nomal licensing review process.

In order to facilitate this review, enclosed is a document entitled,

" Guidelines for Denonstration of Operability of Deep Draft Pumps". Within 30 days from the issuance date of this letter, you should provide a schedule indicating when a response, in the fom of a supplement to FSAP, Sectian 3.9.3, would be provided that discusses your assurance progran for demonstrating long tem operability of your deep draft pumps and the extent to which it confoms to the various portions of these Guidelines. Enphasis should be placed on (1) the establishnent'of installation procedures that are followed each time these pumps are disasserbled and reinstalled, and (2) the testing requirements and bearing wear criteria. The instrunentation called for in the Guidelines should not be considered a requirement.

These Guidelines establish an acceptable nethod of as'uring long tem operability of deep draft purps. They do not necessar 11y constitute the only nethod for demonstrattnq long tem operability.. The staff will review the infomation you submit to detemine whr ther your long tem operability assurance progran for deep draft pumps is in sufficient confomance with these Guidelines to assure lons tem operability.

If not, the st;ff will detc nine whether you have established and utilized other methods and procedures, preferably with the assistance of the pitap nanufacturer, that also denonstrate and assure that these pumps will.perfom their intended functions for the length of tine required.
