Dear Mr. Haynes:
Our letter dated February 2,1981 indicated that the acoustic monitoring system, installed at Nine Mile Point Unit 1 to provide a direct $ indication of safety and relief valve position, would be environmentally qual,ified by July, 1981.

Preliminary tests performed to date indicate acceptable performance of the accelerometers and hardline coaxial cable of the acoustic monitoring system in a LOCA type envirornent.
However, the final program to environmentally

qualify the acoustic monitoring system will commence in January 1982.
