r-e ENCLOSURE TO Llt 279 The apparent excess of air sampler malfunctions as discussed in combined inspection 81-09 was and has been noted by TMI-Environmental Controls.

'In response, the following corrective actions have been initiated:

1.

Routine inspections approximately midway thru the sampling

~

period have been conducted since Pay, 1980.

2.

Since February of 1981 samplers which have malfunctioned, were checked two days after a work order for repairs had been submitted.

If it was determined that the repairs had not been effected, then a follow-up work order would be sub-mitted detailing the malfunction and referencing the original work order.

3.

Since April of 1981 the Staf f Project Coordinator has maintained a record of sa=pler malfunctions with the purpose of replacing those units that exhibited an un-acceptable performance record (i.e. those that resulted in a loss of > 25% of the samples over a one (1) year period).

4.

An additional log vill be initiated and maintained by the Staff Project Coordinator commencing the fouth quarter of 1981, that will record and seek trends cs to specific parts that malfunction.

The effects of reduced operational pressure relative to ambient, atmospheric pressure or sample volume is being evaluated.

If the above effects are of a significant magnitude, the current samplers will be replaced with pressure compensated units as they wear out.
