RE: Temporary Change to Operating Licens No. NPF-8 Technical Specifications Gentlemen:
While performing roc +.ine preventive maintenance under the direction of Colt Industries on Diesel generator 1-2A, it was determined that the engine driven jacket water pump bearing needed tc be replaced due 1.0 failure. A new bearing was obtained from the plant storcroom, cooled with liquid nitrogen and installed in the bearing bore contained in the pump support.
During reassembly, the inside diameter of the bearing was found to be 0.007 inchas undersized. The bearing was pressed from the bearing housing and a dimensional check indicated that the bearing housing inside ditmeter was 0.007 undersized. A new bearing housing with the proper bearing bore dimensions was obtained from the plant storeroom.
While installing the bearing (cooled wich liquid nitrogen), it was dropped into the bearing bore causing the bearing to crack. No additional spare bearings were available onsite.
Currently, spare bearings are in route scheduled to arrive at the plant at 5:30 P.M. on October 12, 1981. Colt Industries has estimated an interval of 48-72 hours to install the bearing, reassemble the pump, and perform operability tests. The completion of repairs will extend past 11:31 P.M. on October 12, 1981, wnich is the deadline for the L.C.0.
under which the preventive maintenance was being cerformed.
Currently with Farley Unit 1 shutdewn for major repairs to the turbine generator, Alabama Power Company, as a nember of the Southern Company Power Pool, is a net purchaser of both capacity and energy during the fourth quarter of 1981. Major maintenance on other generating units is being conducted during this period. The shutdown of Unit 2 to complete this l
repair would further exacerbate this condition of purchasing power and/or delaying necessary maintenance on other units in preparation for winter load requirements.
