SUMMARY
OF JANUARY 16, 2020, PUBLIC MEETING WITH NUCLEAR ENERGY INSTITUTE REGARDING REVISION TO REGULATORY GUIDE 1.200 On January 16, 2020, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff held a public meeting1 with representatives from the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI). The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the status of, and technical details associated with a revision to Regulatory Guide (RG) 1.2002 and provide an update on several other tasks that could enable NRC staff to disposition issues related to newly-developed methods (NDMs) for use in probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) models.
During the meeting, the NRC staff presented slides3 that discussed the changes proposed to the guide along with the schedule for completing the revision. The schedule highlighted additional points where stakeholders would have an opportunity to provide feedback (e.g., developing criteria for NDMs which, if exceeded, would require licensees to seek prior NRC approval before incorporating the NDMs into their PRA models). It was also highlighted that there will be a briefing of the Reliability and PRA Subcommittee to the Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards on February 5, 2020.
After discussion of the revisions to RG 1.200, the NRC staff presented slides4 that discussed how the revision to RG 1.200 would support efforts to establish the framework for implementation and oversight of a change control process for newly developed probabilistic risk assessment methods and a number of other changes.
