GLARIFICATION OF REQUESTS FOR ADDITIONAL GE0 LOGIC INFORMATION 231.3 and 2'. 4 PERRY NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS, UNITS 1 & 2 THE CLEVELAND ELECTRIC ILLUMINATING COMPANY DOCKET NOS. 50-440 & 50-441 The U. S. Geologice.1 Survey has reviewed the geologic data for the Perry Nuclear Power Plant Units 1 and 2 Final Safety Analysis Report, Section 2.5 (Und.ited).

The age and origin of the tunnel faults are indeterminate based on interpretation of the data in the FSMt.

In the section " Tunnel Deformation Origir," (FSAR p. 2.5-75 to 77; equivalent to " Conclusions", GAI Report

~

2063, p. 41 to 43) the Applicant seems to '(1) stress the importance and implications of the microcrack study; it implies older noncapable faulting, (2) downgrade the implications of the gouge consolidation study, it implies younr r, capable faulting, and (3) speculate about glacially-induced fault movements; they imply nontectonic, hence, noncapable. faulting. This

.latter point.is the important one and needs to be amplified-;-the glacially-related phenomena seem to be the youngest tangibic sources of stress that could have caused the last tunnel fault movement and that are now apparently nonexistent.

In order to ' clarify and strengthen that argument, the Applicant should. consolidate applicable data scattered through the FSAR and expand on important ideas by responding to Requests for Additional Information 231.3 and 231.4
