b/.,,.,.. - ; \\ y ou l W In accordance with Plant Technical Specification 6.9.2.a.2, the following event is reported.
On March 22, 1981 it was determined that two control rods were inoperable contrary to Technical Specification 3.10.6.2.
Reactor shutdown was ime-diately commenced and continued until the unit reached a hot shutdown condition.
At approximately 1212 hours0.014 days <br />0.337 hours <br />0.002 weeks <br />4.61166e-4 months <br /> on March 22, 1981 a technician performing a check of control rod N-9 determined that it had an open lif t coil. The i
reactor had previously been operating with control rod L-11 inoperable as permitted by Technical Specification 3.10.6.2.
Reactor shutdown was imme-diately commenced upon discovering the inoperability of control rod N-9.
At I
approximately 1459, shutdown was completed when the reactor trip breakers were opened and control rod N-9 was inserted.
It was later determined that the failure of the control rod was due to a faulty connection in the power supply to the rod drive mechanism which caused the lift coil to remain I
continuously de-energized.
This event was reported on March 23, 1981 to Mr. S. Weise of the NRC, Region II, and Mr. E. J. Furr, Vice President, Nuclear Operations Department, Carolina Power and Light Company.
