s e s co tt PREllMINARY NOT!FICATION NY Date: August 20, 1981 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF SAFEGUARDS EVENT--PNS-I-8I-17 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE national security or public interest significance.

The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff as of this date.

MISSING HANDuuN During a routine daily inventory of security weapons on August 19, 1981, a.38 taliber handgun was discovered missing from the guard house " ready room" The weapon was last inventoried by the 6 a.m. - 6 p.m. shif t on August 18.

The licensee is investigating the disappearance of the weapon and will provide a 24-hou- -eport in accordance with 10 CFR 73.71.

A similar event occurred in Octobe 1980 when a functional.25 caliber handgun used to conduct performance tests c, the walk-through metal detectors was reported missing by the licensee.

That weapon was not recovered.

Region I and the licensee notified the Pittsburgh office of the FBI.

If the current missing weapon is not found within about 24 hours2.777778e-4 days <br />0.00667 hours <br />3.968254e-5 weeks <br />9.132e-6 months <br />, an agent will be sent to the site to obtain further information.

The licensee notified the ctate Police.

No media interest is expected at this time. Neither the licensee nor Region I plan to issue a press release.

The IAT has been informed.

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has been notified.

Two Region I Physical Protection specialists are on site with the Vital Area Assessment Team and will follow up.
