Reference:

SNM Material License SNM-1097, Docket # 70-1113 With reference to activities authorized by NRC License SNM-1097 at the General Electric Nuclear Energy Production (NEP) facility in Wilmington, NC, GE hereby notifies you of our intent to construct a new building and adjacent storage pad within the Controlled Access Area (CAA). See attached sketch.

The proposed building is approximately 50' wide by 100' long and the adjacent storage pad is approximately 120' by 84'. They are located approximately three hundred feet northwest of the present FMO-X building within the CAA.

l Activities in the building and area will consist of decontamination, refurbishment and storage of reactor fuel examination equipment. Radioactive materials and authorized activities including inspection, modification and calibration of reactor fuel examination equipment will be licensed by the State of North Carolina under our existing agreement state license. Special Nuclear Materials (SNM) shall not be authorized for use in this facility or storage area.

The building design is metal construction with insulated roof, walls, and a concrete floor. The construction will also include HVAC, sprinkler systems, electrical and water services, rest rooms, and change room. The building will also be divided into controlled and non-controlled areas. Construction will meet or exceed all State and local codes.

I Prior to construction of the building and pad, soll samples will be taken to assure uranium levels are less than 30 pCi per gram.

Construction activities are scheduled to begin in mid May,1994, and we would appreciate your response to this letter in order to support this schedule.
