Dear Mr. Kovach:
SUBJEC1:
SAfLTY EVALVATION 50R LASALLf. UNil 1 - FUEL CHANNEL EVALUA110N FOR CYCLE b (TAC NO. 79439)
By letter dated April 26, 1990, Commonwealth Edison Company (CLCo) responded to NRC Bulletin 90-02, " loss of Thermal Margin Caused by Channel Box Bow,"
In a subsequent teleconference with the NRC on November 26, 1990, CECO committed to provide additional information regarding the actions that were being taken to account for the impact on Minimum Critical Power kallo (MCPR) of those residual used channel boxes scheduled for reuse in the upcoming Cycle 5 for LaSalle Unit 1.
Your response dated January 7, 1991, indicated that 224 channel boxes are intended for reuse in the upcomin0 Cycle.
You nit,o described the disposition of these channel boxes in the core and the actions taken to assure complianca with the technical specifications regarding the thermal limits.
We have reviewed your ref, ponse and find that it satisfactorily resolves the issues discussed in NRC Bulletin 90-02 for Cycle 5 at LaSalle Unit 1.
However, any application of your analysis to future channel reuse must be evaluated on a cycle specific basis.
Should you have any questions or comments, please contact me at (301) 492-3017.
Sincerely, W T) Nd @ @ N John D. Hit.kman, Project Manager Project Directorate 111-2 Division of Reactor Projects lil/IV/V Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation
