Materials Licensing Section E
D 799 Roosevelt Road 1
C6 Olen Ellyn, IL 60137 License No. 24-11263-01 Expiration Datet 07/31/93 Gentlemen i
The purposes of this letter is to respond to the requirements of the decommissioning regulations.
After review of our current license and facilities we find that our laboratory falls under Category C for Licenses and should not require any further information because the amount of nuclear material we are authorized to possess is below the threshold limits specified for Category A and B licensees, (Copy of our license attached).
Dy way of further explanation, we are an Environmental Health Laboratory in a County Public-Health Department.
We have had a NRC license since 1968.
The early license was to cover some studies with 485 and a electron capture detector for a gas ' chromatograph.
Subsequent to that time and to the present we have been maintaining a routine environmental monitoring laboratory for air, water, and market milk samples for - the metropolitan St. Louis area.
When the requirements for radionuclide analyses of public drinking water supplies became offective in 1977 we were the only laboratory in the State of Missouri to have testing experience and low level capability.
l We joined the EPA Las Vegas QA/QC program and have been responsible for l
testing all the public drinking water supplies of the-State of Missouri to'date.

The purpose of this brief history is to explain items 6A, 7A, and BA on j
our license.
These items are to cover the variety and levels of radioactivity received in the form of standards and quality control j
samples from the EPA QA/QC program.
The combined alpha, beta, and gamma j
activity in solution we have on hand at the present time is about 13 0 l
JACL. Also we have 20 point (sealed) sources with a combined activity of 1ess than 1.0/101.
If, after your review, you find that our laboratory does not fall-into i
Category C Licensees please let me know.
Sincerely, A4j@

Dear Dr. Black:
4 In accordance with the Safe Drinking Water Act regulations relating to laboratory cortification, your status as the princi-i pal certified laboratory in Missouri for the analysis of radio-chemical paramotors in drinking water must be reevaluated on a periodic basis.
According to our records,.your cortification status is due for renewal.
A review.of your participation in the l
performanco evaluation (PE) studios for radiochemical parameters j
shows that your laboratory continues to perform satisfactorily on the PE and cross check sampics.
It is apparent, based on your performanco, that your laboratory continues to meet the require-monts for cortification, thereforo, I am pleased to renew your certification for radiochemistry until December 31, 1991.
J As established under the laboratory cortification program, this cortified status will remain in-effect until the dato indi-cated contingent upon your laboratory's continued satisfactory performanco in the PE studios and maintenance of the required i
standards. of quality' rclating to laboratory operations.
1 I would liko to express my appreciation-to you and your 1
staff for maintaining high standards of quality performance.
It l
I 10 hoped that you will continue to provide support to this l
ossential program designod to $rotect public water supplies.
If you have any questions, pleasc ' contact Dale I. Dates, Regional Quality Assurance Officer, at 913/236-3881.
