Docket No. STN 50-482 Subj: Potential 10CFR50.55(e) Report:
Loose Parts in the Steam Generators
Dear Mr. Seidle:
This letter provides an interim report on a potential 10CFR50.55(e) item concerning loose parts found in the steam generators at Wolf Creek Generating Station.
Mr. Gene Rathbun of Kansas Gas and Electric Company reported this matter to Mr. Mike Murphy of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (Region IV) on December 21, 1982.
The loose parts were discovered during an internal inspection of the secondary side of the steam generators. The first loose part discovered was a small steel wedge located on the lower deck plate between the dished head and the swirl vane tubes of the "B" Steam Generator. The wedge was 2" wide, 3-1/2" long,1-7/16" thick at one end,1/2" thick at the other end and weighed 30.05 ounces.
The second loose part discovered was a steel file located on the lower deck plate between the rows of swirl vane tubes in the "C" Steam Gen-erator. The file was 8-1/16" long and weighed 2.79 ounces. No other loose parts were discovered in any of the four steam generators.
An evaluation is being performed to determine whether or not the loose parts could have adversely affected the safe operation of the plant. In any event, KG&E will perform a loose parts inspection af ter all internal work is completed on the steam generators. A loose parts inspection prior to startup had been planned even before discovered of the two objects discussed in this report.
The status of the safety evaluation will be reported to you on or before
