Dear Mr. Edeinan:

Subject:

Request for Additional Information Pertaining to the Perry Nuc1 car Power Plant Safety Evaluation Report Confirmatory Issue (14) -

" Overheating of Gadolinia Fuel Pellets During the staff's initial review of gadolinia fuel properties as described in GE Report NEDE-20943-P, GE withdrew its report from consideration. This action interrunted the staff's review and has delayed resolution of the subject SER issue. The staff subseouently reviewed selected GE gadolinia fuel properties as described in an appendix to the GESTR-LOCA report ( Appendix B to GE Report HEDE-23785-1-P) and this report has been approved. However, the thernal con-ductivity equation listed in the GESTR-LOCA report is not the one used in the Perry fuel centerline nelting analysis, which is described *in GE Report HEDE-20411-P (Generic Reload Fuel Apolication) and Amendnent 14 to the General Electric Standard Safety Analysis Report (GESSAR).

Since GE bas withdrawn the NEDE-29043-P report fron staff consideration, and has

.i presented only *.he results of urania fuel centerline neiting calculations in Anendment 14 to GESSAR, the staff is concerned with the adeauacy of GE's cadolinia fuel incipient neiting calculations for Perry, and in particular the results of I

calce.lations presented in Table 2 4 of HEDE-20411-P, referenced in the withdrawn NEDE-20943-P rcport.

It is occardingly requested that CEI confirm the adequacy of the results contained in Table 2-4 of HEDE-20411-P, or submit updated i

gadolinia fuel incipient nelting data to enable the NRC staff to determine if SER Confimatory Issue (14) should be considered resolved.

l

!!ithin five days after receipt of this letter, please advise the project manager, i

John J. Stefano, when we nay expect to receive a response to this reouest.
