Dear Mr. Collins:
South Texas Project Units 1 & 2 Docket Nos. STN 50-498, STN 50-499 Fourth Interim Report Concerning Rockbestos Company Coaxial Cable On October 26, 1981, pursuant to 10 CFR 50.55(e), Houston Lighting &
Power Company (HL&P) notified your office of an item concerning cable manufactured by Rockbestos Company used in electrical penetrations supplied by Westinghouse. The Rockbestos Company had informed Westinghouse of a potential for failure of certain coaxial cables. The General Atomic Company has previously filed a 10 CFR 21 report regarding similar Rockbestos coaxial cable.
In our three (3) previous reports concerning this item, HL&P reported to your office that a test program to determine the appropriate corrective measures was underway at Rockbestos and that test results were expected by the end of June, 1982.
In our third interim report, we identified that the testing and associated analyses were still underway at Rockbestos and that the results were expected to be reported to our architect-engineer for evaluation by September 30, 1982.
Bechtel has received and reviewed the Rockbestos reports, however, there is insufficient evidence that the Rockbestos prograq has been formally evaluated and approved by the NRC as an acceptable alternative qualification sequence. Therefore, Bechtel will, in parallel with continued discussions with Rockbestos, investigate alternative cable traterials and suppliers. Our next report concerning this item will be submitted to your office by June 30, 1983.
