DAILY HIGHLIGHT Fort St. Vrain s
On April 26, 1982, while performing a Post' Irradiation Examination inspection of fuel elements that had been removed during the second refueling at Fort St. Vrain, one fuel element was found to have a crack on one face. The-l crack extended across the minimum cross-section between a coolant hole and one face of the block (%.5"), vertically down the full length of the
. block (31.2"), and terminated at the lower exit of the coolant hole.
The element was placed in the initial core on January 4, 1974 into Region 8 Column 5, Layer 6, where it remained until removed during the second refueling
.on July 1, 1981. The element accumulated a burnup of 19,497.15 MWD per i
initial metric ton of uranium plus thorium.
During recent hot cell examinations at General Atomic's facilities the crack was found to extend to the dowel pin. Also, the fuel element block, beneath l
the block where the crack was originally found, contained a crack. This second crack is on the same face and in the same orientation as the crack
~in the first block.
Further analyses and examinations are being performed to evaluate L'oth cracks.
