AMENDED FINAL 10CFR50. 55 (e) /PART 21 REPORT NO. U-28 CALLAWAY PLANT UNIT 1 On February 12, 1981, Union Electric issued Callaway Plant Final 10 CFR 50.55 (e) /Part 21 Report No. U-28 to the U.S.
Nuclear Regulatory Commission Region III Director.
This report concerned suspect cracked Lexan coil spools supplied with General Electric HFA type relays.
It was stated in that report that the coil spools were installed in safety-related relays.
Union Electric advised that all black or clear Lexan coil spools would be replaced regardless of their condition.
Recently issued General Electric Service Advice 721-PSM-169.1 informed Union Electric of an incorrectly sized dropping resistor in the same HFA type relays.
The resistor is incorrectly sized for proper temperature rise and power dissipation.
Failure of the resistor could be adverse to safe plant operation.
Union Electric reported this to the Region III headquarters as a significant deficiency in accordance with 10CFR50.55 (e)/Part 21 on Friday, October 1, 1982.
It is Union Electric's intention to replace the dropping resistor in all Class lE HFA relays with date codes contained in the General Electric Service Advice.
Our schedule for accomplishing this will be dependent upon the availability of replacement resistors from General Electric and working the replacement effort into normal construction activities.
