This letter provides documentation for stateme'.ts concerning the Standby Shutdown System (SSS) which were made to NRC Staff by telephone:
In a telephone conversation on January 18, 1982, reference was made to " fire area" when identifying a space enclosed within three-hour rated fire barriers. The term
" fire zone" had been used in the design description of the SSS for identifying a similar area. As used in the description of the SSS, " fire zone" is equivalent to fire area, a space enclosed within three-hour rated fire barriers.
Each fire area (except the Reactor Containment Buildings) has either a normal or a standby shut-down system train outside the area.
In a telephone conversation on January 29, 1982 a description was provided of the separation between the "A" switchgear room, the "B" division disconnect cubicle, and each of these areas from other plant areas. The "A" switchgear room and the "B" division disconnect cubicle are separated from other plant areas and from each other by three-hour rated fire barriers. Access to the "B" division disconnect cubicle is from the "A" switchgear room.
