l Gentlemen:
BScharf(2)
DEisenhut By letters dated August 31, 1977 and September 23, 1977, you briefly described your feedwater nozzle repair prograte to be perfomed during f
the present refueling outage at the Monticello Wclear Generating Plant. You also stated, in the August 31 letter, that you were recal-culating the adequacy of nozzle reinforcement because removal of seine r
base material is planned.
Your caiculations were being perfomed in accoraance with the requirements of the ASitE (Anerican Society of Mechanical Engineers) Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section !!I, Paragraph NS-3330, and specifically to the alternative rules of NB-3339.
You noted that because the nearest feedwater nozzles are closer to the control rt>d drive return line nozzle and instrument line nozzle than is allowed by NB-3339.1, you propose to invoke the rules of Code i
Case 1804.
Footnote 6 to paragraph 50.55a (Title 10, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 50) states that the use of specific Code Cases may be authorized if proposed alternatives to the descrioed remirements or portions j
thereof provide an acceptable level of cuali and safety.
We have reviewed the application of Code Case 1804 to the specific case at Monticello and have detenained that acceptable levels of quality and safety are indeed provided.
Therefore we approve your invocation of Code Case 1804 with respect to this particular action at the Monticelle Nuclear Generating Plant. Our related Safety Evaluation is attached. b bdfl((SSYkedby g
