Knop, Chief Projects Branch 1 US Nuclear Regulatory Commission Region III 799 Roosevelt Road ULNRC-6 55 Glen Ellyn, IL 60137

Dear Mr. Knop:

INSPECTION REPORT NO. 50-483/83-14 This reply is in response to your letter of July 28, 1983, which transmitted the report of the inspection conducted at Callaway Plant, Unit 1 during the period of June 1 to June 30, 1983.

Our to the item of noncompliance is presented below.

response None of the material in the inspection report or in this response is considered proprietary by Union Electric Company.

(50-483/83-14-01) SEVERITY LEVEL V VIOLATION 10 CFR 50, Appendix B, Criterion IV, states; " Measures shall be established to assure that applicable regulatory requirements, design bases, and other requirements which are necessary to assure adequate quality are included......for procurement of material, equipment,......."

"Within SNUPPS Final Safety Analysis Report Chapter 7.1.2.3 states; a cabinet or panel associated and identified with a single safety-related separation group, no identification of the safety-related wiring is required.

The separation group of the panel or cabinet, however, is clearly identified."

Contrary to the above, the turbine driven auxiliary feedwater pump turbine control panel was procured, received and installed with improper identification that indicated the panel to be nonsafety related instead of being a component of a safety related separation group.

Corrective Action Taken And The Results Achieved:

Several mechanical specifications, for equipment similar to that noted in the inspection, were checked for the inclusion of nameplate color coding requirements.

In addition, a walkdown of similar equipment, at the Callaway Plant, was performed.

In both cases no 8309090176 830902 gDRADOCK 05000483 PDR AUG 2 91983

Mr. R. C. Knop August 26, 1983 other missing requirements or incorrect color codings were noted.

The incorrect nameplates will be replaced with properly color coded ones.

Corrective Action To Be Taken To Avoid Further Noncompliance:

This is considered an isolated incident, and as such requires no further corrective action.

The Date When Full Compliance Will Be Achieved:

It is expected that full compliance will be achieved when the correct nameplates are installed, currently anticipated by October 3, 1983.

If you have any questions regarding this response or if additional information is required, please let me know.

Very trul
