Initial Talsphona Date of Report Date:

August 3,1933 Occurrenc e:

July 7, 1983 REPORT OF NONCOMPLIANCE WITH CONDITIONS OF NJPDES PERMIT NO. NJ 000 5550 REPORT NUMBER 000 5550/83/12 IDENTIFICATION OF OCCURRENCE Noncompliance with item 9b(6)b, page 6 of 20.

[AUSE OF NONCOMPLIANCE:

The discharge-intake temperature difference of the Augmented Of fgas-New Radwaste system exceeded the germit limiting condition of 270F.

The temperature difference was 32 y, DESCRIFFION OF NONCOMPLYING DISCHARGE:

The use of one heat exchanger coupled with high intake temperature, resulted in a heat overload causing the temperature difference excursion.

DURATION OF NONCOMPLIANCE:

Undetermined CORRECTIVE ACTION TO REDUCE THE NONCOMPLYING DISCHARGE:

A second heat exchanger _was put into service, in addition the amount of steam to the evaporator, which is a major load on the system was reduced. These actions brought the system back into compliance.

CORRECTIVE ACTION TO PREVENT RECURRENCE:

Continue to use two heat exchangers and vary the flow to the evaporator during

- periods of high intake temperature, to minimize overloading the system.
