Dear Mr. Clark:

NUREG-0737, Item II.D.1 Safety and Relief Valve Test Program ,

This letter is to provide an update of the modification and analysis work being done by the Omaha Public Power District on safety and relief valve discharge piping stress due to valve opening.

Based on analysis performed by Combustion Engineering, the l PORV's may lift as a result of operational transients.

l Analysis of the resultant discharge piping stresses, per-l formed by the District during the 1983 refueling outage, indicated that an overstressed condition could exist if a PORV were to open during operation. This is in spite of the mz fact that a PORV has in the past opened during operation

$$$ without any detectable damage to the discharge piping.

@@ Based on the District's analysis, several modifications were i no acade to the PORV discharge piping and supports to reduce G$ possible stresses to acceptable levels. These modifications Qg were made prior to startup from the 1983 refueling outage.

no OO At the present time, the District is completing an analysis

. g< of the safety valve inlet and discharge piping. This piping om could also be overstressed in the unlikely event of a safety

$$a valve opening. Modifications to the safety valve inlet and discharge piping are currently in the design stages and are scheduled to be completed during the 1984 refueling outage.
